THE VACCINES
FLUVAX® (CSL Biotherapies); VAXIGRIP® (sanofi pasteur distributed by sanofi-aventis) and INFLUVAC® (Solvay Pharmaceuticals) are the three influenza vaccines that will be subsidised for the 2010 season.

Influenza vaccine strains for 2010
- A/ California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like strain (15 μg HA per dose)
- A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like strain (15 μg HA per dose)
- B/Brisbane/60/2008-like strain (15 μg HA per dose)
Do VAXIGRIP®, FLUVAX® and INFLUVAC® contain blood products?
No blood products are used in the manufacturing process of FLUVAX®,VAXIGRIP® and INFLUVAC®.
Do VAXIGRIP®, FLUVAX® and INFLUVAC® contain thiomersal?
No FLUVAX®, VAXIGRIP® and INFLUVAC® are preservative free. None of the vaccines contain thiomersal.
Do VAXIGRIP®, FLUVAX® and INFLUVAC® contain neomycin, polymyxin or gentamicin?
Yes FLUVAX® and VAXIGRIP® vaccines contain traces of neomycin due to the use of this substance during production. FLUVAX® also contains polymyxin. INFLUVAC® contains gentamicin. These vaccines should be used with caution in subjects with a hypersensitivity to neomycin, polymyxin or gentamicin.
Are VAXIGRIP®, FLUVAX® and INFLUVAC® latex free?
VAXIGRIP® and INFLUVAC® are latex free (however, this is not stated in the Data Sheets). FLUVAX® uses a Benton Dickinson needle shield, which contains 43% latex.
Vaccine Availability
Orders will be dispatched as soon as the vaccine is available from the supplier (usually mid March).
What does the vaccine cost?
The vaccine costs $9.00 (excl. GST) per dose. For patients eligible for funded vaccines, the vaccine is free. Either brand (FLUVAX®,VAXIGRIP® and INFLUVAC®) can be used for patients eligible for subsidised vaccination and patients who are privately funded. The programme runs from when the vaccine becomes available (mid March) through to the end of June 2010. Claiming will be via the usual Sector Services process.
How much is the administration subsidy?
$18.48 (excl. GST).

There are no delivery charges
CLAIMING FUNDED VACCINE
Manual forms call Wickcliffe on 0800 259 138 and quote your Sector Services (HealthPAC) payee number as your customer number.
The patient’s correct NHI number is essential to process the claim – an incorrect NHI number (often adding an ‘o’ rather than a ‘0’) is the most common reason for rejected claims.
If you do not know your patient’s NHI number, phone Sector Services on 0800 855 151. You will need:
- Your payee number.
- Patient’s surname first and middle name.
- Patient’s gender and date of birth.
- Patient’s previous address.
Have they been known as any other name/s.

FUNDED VACCINE CLAIMS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED WITHIN SIX MONTHS FROM THE DATE THE PATIENT RECEIVED THE VACCINE OR BY 30TH NOVEMBER 2010. CLAIMS RECEIVED AFTER THIS DATE WILL BE REJECTED.

Please refer to Pandemic Section - Early Prevention Information Pack for claiming the immunisation benefit for the Celvapan® vaccine.
There has not been time to reconfigure Practic Management Systems (PMS) to record Celvapan®. However, General Practice should clearly document the administration of Celvapan® in patient notes.

Influenza vaccine damaged in transit
Influenza vaccine damaged in transit may be returned to Healthcare Logistics for destruction.
Where to return expired influenza vaccine
Expired influenza vaccine can be returned using the normal process for expired/damaged paediatric vaccine to your local ProPharma vaccine warehouse.
Refund for unused stock
It can be difficult to determine exact requirements towards the end of the influenza season. A refund will be available for 10 units of unused stock of VAXIGRIP only, from any one account. Unused stock must be returned by 31st July 2010 to be refunded.
